桂綸鎂自電影《藍色大門》出道14年，一路走來似乎一帆風順，2012年以《女朋友。男朋友》成為金馬影后，且連續３年入圍該獎項，但從2008年起接演多部兩岸三地電影後，深受衝擊，接受雜誌訪問時表示：「一直以來，我都是用一種很笨拙的方式讓自己的身心貼近角色。可是，當對手透過不一樣的表演體系演繹時，我時常沒有辦法招架住。」
桂綸鎂在《白日焰火》對上柏林影帝廖凡、《聖誕玫瑰》和金馬影帝郭富城飆戲，即使戲齡超過10年的她，面對科班出身演員依然招架不住，漸漸失去表演動力，因此選擇在2014年放一個大假，休息一年多，以填補生活和表演領域的空乏，「到法國上一個月的表演課，也去旅行，用緩慢、平靜的方式，解決沮喪。」
沉澱過後整個人輕鬆不少，桂綸鎂在《德布西森林》嘗試不同演出，「沒有耗費太多心神揣想角色，當下的劇情與環境讓我感覺到什麼，就讓最真實的感覺發生。」雖然成為金馬入圍遺珠，周圍工作人員替她感到失落，但她不以為意，只是立刻打給入圍女配角的陸弈靜說恭喜。該片28日上映。
